Meeting Minutes March 2024
he Spring Valley garden club met Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at 6 PM at the Spring Valley library. Kelly hosted for Tami. Eight members and one guest answered the roll call question if you could have only one plant, shrub, tree, what would it be? It was fun to hear the variety of answers. Marly Gehrking was our guest and is interested in joining garden club.
The secretary's report from our last meeting in November 2023 was read and approved.
Caroline Groten reported a balance of $1680.19. She had also gone to the bank and signed appropriate papers in order to be the second signer for the club. Previous signature authorizations were removed from the record. Monthly paper copies of statements were cancelled as this was costing the club $5 per month.
Old Business: Alicia had spoken to Sally Broadwater about their 4H Club the Bloomfield Cloverleaves about working on a community project together. Refreshing the plantings around the Indian where the tour center used to be was a project of consideration. Alicia will talk to Sally about this before next meeting.
Ann had a flyer about the Houston County MASTER Gardeners workshop to be held April 6, from 8:30 to 2: 45PM, to be held at the High School in Houston. The title of the workshop is Gardening in the Driftless.
Members revisited, the discussion about planters downtown on Broadway. We will only put up eight tubs this year versus the usual 12 tubs, do the fact that we do need new tubs, but in the future, the city will be redoing the downtown two blocks on Broadway. We will wait to see what those plans involved before purchasing new tubs.
New Bussiness:
We will plan to redo the flower bed by the post office this year and honor of our longtime member, Ruth Lemke. When asking her daughter, Ann, about favorite flowers, she said, peonies, roses, hibiscus, forget me nots. Actually she liked all flowers. Tami and Alicia will look into appropriate plantings for this project.
Deb Dahl mentioned another long time member, Mary Ellen MacNamara died this past January 23, at the age of 95. She had lived at the Spring Valley Care Center. It was decided that we would donate a book ($30-$35 value) to the Spring Valley library in her honor. Since Mary Ellen‘s obituary stated that she wanted everyone to go to heaven it was determined that we should choose a an inspirational book with gardening illustrations. Tami Edgar will take care of this. A condolence card will also be sent to her daughter, Patricia LaRose with the information about the book donated to library in her mother’s name.
Next point of discussion included flowers to plant at the flagpole. Last year we talked about having more perennials and possibly native plants there. Coneflower, brown eyed Susans and lyastris are there from last season. Prairie Moon Nursery in Winona has native plants for sale. Deb Dahl also suggesting getting native plants from Tim Gossman. Caroline mention that native plants don’t necessarily bloom throughout the season. When choosing plants for this location that needs to be taken into consideration.
Our guest, Marly Gehrking also told club members about a trunk or truck sale from Greenwood Plants in Rochester. It is located at 6904 18th Ave, Rochester. The shop is open April 22 Earth Day. Around the end of June they have the sale that she mentioned to fill up your trunk for $100 or your truck for $150. This information generated MUCH interest.
Alicia will invite someone from the business alliance to come to our next meeting on April 9 to discuss the plans for renovating the downtown Broadway area and how that would affect our plantings and responsibility for maintaining those. Caroline Groten is to be our host next time and will let us know if the meeting will be in her home, or at the library since the alliance may be available to speak with us. There was much discussion about the cities’ future plans and our responsibility as far as planting and maintaining those. I feel there is need for much better communication and expectations between the club and the city, especially considering limited membership.
After discussion it was determined that the plant sale this spring will be May 4 from 9 to 1130 at the old quilt shop location on the highway. Vicki will talk to Corey Marzolf, Ann will make posters and put the notice on the electronic sign.
Dues of $12 per member are payable to Caroline or Sarah.
The meeting was adjourned, and Kelly had refreshments for us before we left for the evening.

The Spring Valley Garden Club met on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at 6 pm at the library. Nine members answered the roll call to tell about something you saw in the fall that was surprising or interesting.
The secretary’s report from October was read and approved. The treasurer reported that the balance was the same as October ($1685.16) plus $.02 interest and confirmed the $300 from the city was deposited on August 1.
Old business: Chad Hindt had picked up the downtown tubs for winter storage. At least 2-3 tubs are bad with cracks or ruined plugs. After discussion the club decided to just work with what we have that are good in 2024 and put them on less corners. Nancy reported that the Spring Valley Business Alliance is still working on the revitalization plan for downtown and that the city had OK’d a architect plan. However, we do not know what sort of planters they will want in the future so we do not want to spend money on new ones that will not fit the plans. The sign-up sheet for 2024 meetings was passed again.
New business: In regard to the 2024 meetings, the club discussed not having a meeting in February as there is usually little to discuss. Caroline Groten made a motion and Brenda Haack seconded to not have a meeting in February 2024. The motion passed. We also tried to think of ways to grow membership of the club. This discussion needs to continue in 2024. The club also went over suggested changes to the club Constitution in detail (copy attached). Caroline Groten made a motion and Brenda Haack seconded to adopt the revised version of the Constitution. The motion passed. The Christmas party is scheduled for Tuesday, December 12, at 6 pm at Vicki’s home. Family is welcome; bring a dish to pass and a gift of under $10.
Election of club officers: The following were our slate of nominations: Nancy Cornell and Vicki Rolli for co-president, Sarah Johnson as treasurer and add Caroline Groten as a second signer for the checking account, and Tami Edgar as secretary. Caroline Groten made a motion and Sarah Johnson seconded to elect Nancy Cornell and Vicki Rolli as co-president. The motion passed. Caroline Groten made a motion and Brenda Haack seconded to elect Sarah Johnson as treasurer and Caroline Groten as second signer for the checking account. The motion passed. Sarah Johnson made a motion and Brenda Haack seconded to elect Tami Edgar as secretary. The motion passed.
The meeting adjourned at 7:02 pm. Deb served refreshments and shared some garden folklore.

Meeting Minutes October 2023
The Spring Valley Garden Club met at 6 pm on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at the library. The meeting was called to order at 6:10 pm by Deb Dahl. Six members answered the roll call to tell what their favorite thing was about belonging to the garden club.
The secretary’s report from September was read and approved. The treasurer reported the balance was the same as September and verified that a check from the city had been deposited.
In old business: Deb and Brenda had cleaned up the flower beds and Brenda had cleaned out the downtown tubs. Either Deb or Brenda will contact Chad Hindt about moving the tubs to storage for the winter.
In new business: the group went over the Constitution in detail and many changes have been suggested. The revised Constitution will be reviewed and voted on at the November meeting. In addition to the edits, it has been suggested that we do not have a meeting in February as well as January since we typically do not have any club business to discuss at that time. Our November meeting will also be officer elections. All present officers have held those offices for long periods of time.
There are tentative plans to participate in the Christmas on Historic Broadway tree trail. Alicia, Ann, and Kim are interested in planning decorations for the tree.
The meeting adjourned at 7:30. Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at 7 pm with Alicia and Deb hosting.

Meeting Minutes July 2023
The Spring Valley Garden Club met on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at 7 pm at Spring Park. Vicki called the meeting to order at 7:07 pm. Eight members answered the roll call the name a place famous for its landscaping.
The secretary’s reports for May and June were read. The treasurer reported a balance of $1,211.06.
In old business, the downtown planters were discussed. Some had been leaking, the city was not getting them watered on a schedule due to lack of help and had not informed the garden club. The drought conditions have been hard on everyone’s plants. It was decided to check the planters more often and discuss what to do with the planters over winter.
In new business, Spring Valley Estates had requested we return the flower show to their facility. There is presently construction on Farmer Street that would make having the show at the Methodist Church difficult for people to visit. It was decided to change to the care center and Deb will let them know, but we may need to cancel due to drought or do a smaller version. We will reassess in early August.
Alicia brought forward a couple suggestions. She would like to redo the flower bed at the Post Office with more perennials and pollinator plants and dedicate it to Ruth Lemke, longtime member who passed away in June. Ann, Ruth’s daughter, mentioned that it would be fitting since Ruth used to work at the bank across the street from the post office and Ray Lemke used to work for the post office. Alicia also suggested the garden club plan to have a garden-themed Christmas tree at the Christmas on Historic Broadway celebration in November. Everyone present liked the idea and we should start collecting garden items to put on the tree.
The meeting adjourned at 7:54 pm. Alicia served watermelon and presented information on herbal remedies.

The Spring Valley Garden Club met at the library at 7 pm on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. The meeting was called to order at 7:01 pm by Vicki Rolli. Ten members answered the roll call to name the flower for their birthday month.
The secretary’s report for February 2023 was read and approved. The treasurer reported depositing dues and interest for a balance of $1,558.67.
In old business, there was discussion about the electronic sign. Alicia had spoken with Dan Terbeest about building boxes for flowers. After discussion, we will check with the city again about planting perennials instead. Sarah was informed of the vote to donate $100 to the Friends of the Spring Valley Public Library. She will make the payment from club funds.
In new business, the flower show theme and categories were shared. This year’s theme is Earthly Landscapes. The city is NOT making garden plots available this year, so we will not be able to donate garden produce to the food shelf. Ann let everyone know that the Houston County Master Gardeners are having a gardening workshop on April 1. Ann has registered and plans to go if anyone else wants to go with her. She will forward the information to everyone.
The meeting adjourned at 7:36 pm. Kelly served refreshments and shared some fun facts and the history of greenhouses.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at 7 pm, probably at the library, and hosted by Sarah.

Meeting Minutes September 2022
The Spring Valley Garden Club met on Tuesday, September 13, at 6:30 pm at the gazebo at Spring Creek Park. Eleven members answered the roll call to describe a favorite plant container. Deb Dahl called the meeting to order.
The secretary was not present and the August minutes were not read, but approved anyway.
There was no treasurer report but it was approved.
In old business: the flower show went well. The group agreed that more advertising next year for kids (and whomever) to make bouquets would be good, as people really seemed to enjoy it. It would also be helpful if members bringing arrangements could let those setting up what categories they may be bringing arrangements for a better job could be done for allowing space.
In new business: In regard to the downtown tubs, Chad’s summer help has gone back to school so Brenda has been helping water the tubs. Members plan to keep in touch by phone or text about cleaning up the tubs and flower beds in late September. Jeanette Baker nominated the Garden Club for “seed money” from Home Federal. If the club is a recipient, Deb Dahl will be notified. Chris Hahn of the SV EDA would like input from the Garden Club on new “Welcome” signs for Spring Valley. He will be in touch with the club in the future as plans develop.
The meeting adjourned at 7 pm. Sarah served refreshments and everyone participated in garden trivia.
Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at 7 pm at the library. Nancy will be hosting.

Brenda offered to upcycle the decking from her house to make the boxes. Alicia may have a friend to build the boxes. Deb is going to look at box liners. Ann and Alicia will take measurements at the sign to figure out the maximum size. Deb also said she had followed up on alternatives to Farbo Growers for mums and found that the number of plugs for purchase from a different vendor are too many for us to grow and sell.
In new business, we discussed possibly moving the spring plant sale to a different location because the Kwik Trip has moved. Alternatively, ACE hardware was mentioned. Brenda will check with Todd Jones. Vicki said she was sure Cory Marzolf would let us use the old Quilters Quarters again if we want to use the shelter of the roof.
Deb asked if we had any word from the school on flowers for the planters. Nancy was not present and is usually the contact with the school. Alicia mentioned that a friend has children with a fundraiser through Gerten’s where we could get a flat of 36 perfusion zinnias for $26. Caroline moved we order from the fundraiser and Ann seconded. Motion passed. Brenda offered to check with the Rustic Rose to get 12 Baby Tut papyrus plants for the downtown planters as our center plant.
Ann offered several informational items. The garden club meetings have been added to the EDA community calendar. The city is planning Wednesdays on Broadway starting June 15, once a month for the summer, 3rd Wednesday from 5-8 pm. Jenny Simon at the library mentioned we might want to have a table for the Garden Club to promote our group. Ann also passed out the theme and categories for the flower show: A Tribute to Classic Reading. The flower show will be Friday, August 19, 2022. We will have Nancy check to see if we can use the Methodist church fellowship hall again.
The meeting adjourned at 8:01 pm. Alicia served refreshments and showed a video of a geothermal greenhouse in Alliance, Nebraska, owned by a man in his 90s.
Our next meeting is Tuesday, April 12, at 7 pm at the library with Caroline hosting.

It was decided to check with Faith United Methodist Church about having the flower show there so as to keep the seniors safer. Ann volunteered to call the church. We also decided to change the show hours to 1:30-5 pm.
New business: Discussion on when to plant the downtown planters. The group decided to try planting on Tuesday, May 18 at 6 pm. Deb will ask Chad about getting the planters out of storage. Nancy (not present) had said she could take care of the pea gravel and having the fire department fill the planters with water. Alicia volunteered to pick up the reserved soil. The planters are to have a salvia, profusion zinnias, vinca vine, and wandering jew. Several members decided to meet on Thursday, May 13 to plant the flowerbed at the flagpole. Ann asked if we should have a float in the Ag Days parade in honor of our 60th anniversary. Alicia and Kimmi volunteered to work on some float ideas. Some other flowerbed assignments were changed (needs clarification).
The meeting adjourned at 8 pm. Deb shared a short topic on the history of May baskets. Tami then followed with more of her topic from April on growing succulents. Deb served refreshments and we held a drawing for the May baskets.
Our next meeting is Tuesday, May 8, 2021, with Vicki hosting. Vicki announced plans to have a garden tour at a home in Grand Meadow. The group will meet at 5:45 pm at the dental office parking lot to carpool to Grand Meadow with a meeting and refreshments to follow at Pinelawn Park along Hwy 16.

Meeting Minutes April 2021
The Spring Valley Garden Club met at First English Lutheran Church at 7 pm on Tuesday, April 13, 2021. Eleven members were present and answered the roll call to name a plant you want to try growing this year. Special note: The meetings for November 2020, February 2021, and March 2021 were canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. We also canceled our Christmas party in December 2020.
Deb called the meeting to order. All members were masked and seated socially distant.
Secretary’s report: The secretary’s report from the October 2020 meeting was read and approved.
Treasurer’s report: The treasurer reported no activity on our account except for a few cents interest. Our current balance is $1504.04. Most members paid their dues.
Old business: The poor condition of the Hwy 16 sign and flower bed was brought up. Deb reported that Brenda was trying to get Boyd Metcalf involved in fixing the sign. Brenda has been all over town cleaning the flowerbeds. Kim T. asked about getting barrels out of storage at her home to take to the former Visitor Center site. We need to check with the city about placing them at the site again.
New business: We had much discussion on when to have our plant sale. We decided on Saturday, May 8, 9-11 am, at the former Quilter’s Quarters location by Kwik Trip. Vicki will check with Cory Marzolf for permission. Deb will check with city hall about having the plant sale on the electronic sign. Ann will talk to Jenny Simon about getting the sale on a Spring Valley Facebook page and make posters. Our next topic was plants for the downtown planters. Annette at the Farm Store has soil already. Alicia will check with Todd at Ace about the rest of the soil. Alicia will be getting salvia, Vicki brought up profusion zinnias and several creeping flowers were discussed. Ann asked if the club was going to sponsor the garden plot again this year, with the produce going to the food shelf. The group voted to continue with that project and Alicia said she had already paid for the plot whether the garden club used it or not. Ann asked if we shouldn’t find a secondary location for the flower show as the Spring Valley Estates may not be open for public events by August. Several options were discussed and we think Faith United Methodist would be the best second option.
The meeting adjourned at 8:35. Tami presented a topic about low-maintenance succulents while the group enjoyed refreshments.
Our next meeting is Tuesday, May 11, 2021, hosted by Deb at her home.

Members had met at 5 pm to clean off the flagpole flower bed before attending the meeting.
The secretary’s report from September was read and approved. The treasurer was not present but had reported to Deb that the balance was the same as last month ($1503.97).
In old business: the tubs have been cleaned out and the city has put them in storage. Deb and Brenda had cleaned off the post office flower bed. Caroline will clean off the cemetery planters. Meeting Minutes August 2020
The Spring Valley Garden Club met at 6:30 pm at South Park. There were 12 members present. We first made 28 bouquets for the nursing home and other senior facilities in town. The meeting was called to order by Deb at 7:20 pm. The roll call was to name a song that mentions a flower or plant.
The secretaries report from July was read and approved. The treasurer did not bring her books but was sure the balance was the same as in July, $1,485.95.
Old business: The 3-gallon watering jugs for the flowerbeds and planters are falling apart. Deb checked with Ace Hardware and they can order some for us. We also weren’t too sure the city has been watering enough water at a time. Brenda volunteered to ride along with them to make sure they learn correctly.
New business: In discussions as to what to do with our money from the Osterud/Winter Fund, Ruth suggested purchasing some trees for Spring Park. We also talked about amending the soil of the city flower beds and purchasing higher-quality flowers next year.
Ann suggested a project to clean up the back of the library building. It is very weedy and overgrown. The group agreed it would be good project. Ann will check with Jenny at the library and schedule a time.
Caroline is collecting pictures of the club for the Spring Valley Foundation web site. Since we lost the Tribune, the Foundation is trying to establish a place for the community to get information about what happens around town.
Alicia and Deb updated us about the food shelf garden. They had harvested quite a lot of fresh vegetables for the food shelf. Deb stated that people were indeed taking the fresh vegetables from the food shelf.
Our topic had been making the bouquets. Sarah brought snacks and everyone provided their own beverage. We visited a bit and cleaned up the shelter.
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 8, 2020, at 6:30 pm at Spring Park. Kelly will bring snacks. Everyone should bring their own beverage and chair.

Meeting Minutes July 2020
The Spring Valley Garden Club met Wednesday, July 15, 2020, at 7 pm in the lovely pleasant surroundings of Caroline’s garden. Eight members answered the roll call naming a dangerous plant.
The secretaries report from June was read and approved. For the treasurer’s report, Sarah reported that the current balance is $1,485.95, including the $1,000 that we received from the Osterud/Winter Foundation. Deb sent a thank you for the generous donation. The group briefly discussed some possible uses for the funds, including replacing/amending the soil in some of the beds and buying better quality flowers for the downtown tubs (mandevilla vines for the tubs was suggested).
Many members commented on how nice the tubs and flower beds are looking this year. The city is now on a schedule to water and fertilize twice a week. Thanks to Brenda Haack for her many hours of weeding, dead heading, & watering the young plants.
Alicia & Caroline have been busy with the community vegetable garden. They were able to donate 2 heads of cauliflower, some green beans and some peppers this past week to the food shelf. As plants keep producing they hope to have fresh produce for the food shelf twice a week.
Deb mentioned that Tami suggested that since we were unable to hold the flower show this year during Ag Days we might want to make bouquets for the common areas of the nursing home, assisted living, Evergreens, and Hillside Homes. We all thought it was a good idea. Deb will check with the centers to see if that will work. We discussed possibly holding our next meeting at a South Park pavilion and bringing flowers to make the bouquets. We will send out an email when we have more information.
It was suggested that we start meeting at 6:30 for our future outdoor meeting since it gets dark earlier. We will continue to meet outside until we feel it is safer to meet inside. The next meeting will tentatively be August 11th at the south park.
After the meeting Carolyn served us a pretty blue bagged snack & beverage. As we enjoyed our snack she informed us about her future plans for a butterfly garden. We ended the evening with a stroll through her peaceful yard and beautiful garden.
